  • Coconut Oil and Crohn’s Disease

    Coconut Oil and Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory syndrome in the bowel, which causes debilitating intestinal swelling, cramping, and diarrhoea. Some other symptoms may also include nausea, weight loss, fatigue, sore red eyes, and anaemia. The onset of the disease is most common in adults in their 20’s.

There is much debate around whether coconut oil could be beneficial to help combat Crohn’s disease. While Bondi Beach Tea Co. are by no means trained medical practitioners, we do believe in spreading the word for any natural remedies we come across that might help to combat illness and poor health. Please, do your research around this topic, however, following is what we have uncovered on the subject of coconut oil and Crohn’s disease.

Coconut oil is thought to have the potential to help with Crohn’s disease due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It also contains healing properties that could help to kill off micro-organism that may be responsible for the illness. Putting these two factors together, coconut oil could quite possibly be a preventative and a cure for Crohn’s disease at the same time.

There have been several studies undertaken, one specific study [1] was done on mice using good fats, which showed results of different gut microbial. One group of mice who were fed a “good fat” diet and the other group were given a “normal diet”. Those on the good fat diet had less severe small intestine inflammation at the end of the study. It is thought that the good fats directly influence the diversity of the gut microbiome, which has the potential to modulate the severity or presence of Crohn’s disease in humans.

A portion at the opening of the intestine, which is called the cecum, is where Crohn’s disease usually causes the majority of the inflammation. It is believed that area can be positively impacted by consuming coconut oil.

It could be possible to decrease intestinal inflammation, by eating healthy fats like coconut oil, just as much as when the fat eaten is in small quantities.

Crohn’s disease can be a very painful and stressful time for many people. The debate about whether coconut oil or any good oil for that matter, will benefit the recovery of Chron’s disease is long being discussed and research is ongoing. For this matter, it is not promoted as a cure or preventative. For people who battle with the disease, they might choose to take coconut oil if they are looking for a natural alternative that has been rumoured by many to show some positive benefits.

Is too much stress just thinking about it? Why don’t you unwind with a cup of Bondi Beach Tea Co. while you sit down to do your research? Check out our natural herbal blends online now.
